Since you are working in CBI, you have a broad scope of cases to investigate. Virtually any case which looks inscrutable to the state police can come to CBI on the orders of Central Government. So you need an extensive training. This training shall be tough just like your job. The schedule of the training is as follows:

Work Profile
It is a non uniform job .The main function of Sub-Inspectors (or Inspectors) posted in the Branches/Units is to make enquiries and investigations and to gather information. They will enquire into or investigate the cases which are allotted to them. It is also their duty to look after their cases in Courts during trial or during the disciplinary proceedings which are initiated on the recommendations of CBI. Therefore the job profile of CBI includes frequent visits to courts which can be cumbersome for many people. Taking criminal to the courts safely is another concern attached to this profile. As CBI sometimes takes up cases of terrorists, it can be a challenging task. But no concern as you shall be provided adequate security from police. The work profile of an inspector and sub inspector remains the same.
Due to these functions the CBI SI profile is considered to be a tough profile. You will need to extend your working hours or may even work on Saturdays. In addition, this profile demands a lot of travelling across India, wherever you are allotted a case you will need to go there, collect all the information and perform the investigation. So it is a stressful job and your family & personal life suffer. But in such investigations, you shall have complete authority over state police and other involved departments.
Jurisdiction and powers of CBI
The legal powers of investigation of the CBI are derived from the DSPE Act 1946, which confers powers, duties, privileges and liabilities on the Delhi Special Police Establishment (CBI) and officers of the Union Territories. The central government may extend to any area (except Union Territories) the powers and jurisdiction of the CBI for investigation, subject to the consent of the government of the concerned state. Members of the CBI at or above the rank of sub-inspector may be considered officers in charge of police stations. So while on investigation even an SI has a lot of power and he can arrest or interrogate a Govt official well above his own (SI) rank.
Anyone will admit that CBI SI is one of the most influential and powerful posts offered by SSC CGL. While on investigation a CBI official heads the team which has state police officers and officers from other concerned departments with the ultimate authority residing with CBI.
All the departments (IT, excise, custom, narcotics) and even Politicians know that if they come under CBI scanner, they can’t escape it. That is why a CBI official is always respected/feared by police, other government officials, Bankers, Businessman and Politicians. Among General public, friends and relatives also you will be greatly respected. Another thing, there is usually a perception among people that other department inspectors(IT , excise , custom) always feed on UTM , which is not the case for CBI officers. So you will truly be respected behind your back also.
Here are the newspaper clippings showing the work/power of CBI.
Promotion
Promotion opportunities is good in CBI. It takes around 5 years to get first promotion that is to become an inspector. But Second Promotion to Deputy Superintendent takes usually 12-13 years. Then you will become Additional Superintendent after 3rd promotion which takes around 10 years. After that in every 4-5 years you get a promotion. Normally a Sub Inspector go up to the level of Senior Superintendent. In rare case a person joined as SI in very young age and maintaining a very good record, can go up to deputy inspector general of police which is a big shot post to have.
Salary
Even though SI in CBI is a 4200 grade Pay job but then also his salary is equivalent to a 4600 grade pay central Govt employee as he gets 25% extra of Basic + DA and also he is paid 13 months’ salary in a year.
Effective In hand salary (Considering 13 month salary):
Class X cities= Rs. 43,166
Class Y cities= Rs. 39,492
Class Z cities= Rs. 37,664
Hence effective in hand salary is more than any other posts offered in SSC-CGL.
In CBI, it is very difficult to earn UTM as you will always be in the scanner of your department.
Physical Standards required
This is among the very few jobs for which any kind of physical disability will make you unfit for the job. CBI demands very good Physical fitness all through your service. You go through a rigorous training during your first year. But before all that you should have the following physical standards to get selected in CBI as SI. You should not opt for CBI if you don’t match any of the following criteria.
- a) Height
For men - 165 cms.
